And then underneath these protective reflexes is measuring the distance from the floor. If Baby has not been propped and has learned to come up to sitting herself, she will have explored coming farther and farther away from the floor up into space. Then, falling and protective reflexes aren't scary.

Interesting. While I can't say that I'd heard this before, it does seem to fit in with the general pattern of babies developing what they need when they need it (ok, excepting historically new developments like powerpoints etc). Thanks for sharing this!

And then there's the wonderful lying on the side; leading to side-elbow-supported; leading to side-hand-supported; leading to sitting. I think the sequences leading to independent sitting are some of the most fun!

Beverly,

How much can a parent help their child be whole and happy? With the information you offer they can surely participate in the child's development and well being. Actually, last evening, I was teaching adults some of the same stuff. To understand design and function will lead to better and happier bodies. Spinal Curves, so important. They are often taken for granted, until something is curving the wrong way and then all the stress and pain that can result. I look forward to knowing more of what you know. Your new book was on my xmas list, but didn't get it. So, I will have to go get it myself. I look forward to the read.

Hello Damian
During the first few months, Tummy Time helps babies develop their neck muscles to lift and hold their head up. As babies lift their head higher, they begin to support themselves on their forearms. Developing good head and neck control in Tummy Time, three-month-old babies are more visually aware of their surroundings.

Lie down on the floor so your baby can see you:
- Baby on Her Back: Notice if your baby brings her head to midline. Does she bring both hands to her chest, grasp her hands together and look down at her hands?
- Baby on Tummy: Notice if your baby can lift and rotate her head side to side. Three-month-old babies are beginning to bring their head to midline in this position. Is your baby bringing both arms forward to support herself on her forearms?

Some babies may only need a few minutes in Tummy Time but maybe twice a day to become comfortable in this position. Enjoy your Tummy Time explorations together. Let us know if this is helpful and how you are doing.
